A recent systematic review (Herbert, R. D. and M. Gabriel (2002). Effects of stretching before and after exercising on muscle soreness and risk of injury: a systematic review. Br. Med. J. 325:468–470) concluded that the best available evidence indicates that stretching before or after exercise does not prevent muscle soreness or injury and that there isinsufficient evidence to assess effect on performance. There is not sufficient evidence to endorseor discontinue routine pre- or postevent stretching to preventinjury among competitive or recreational athletes.
